Analyzing Rorschach – Banalities

When you’re applying a Rorschach test, there are thousands and thousands of possible answers you can get. The only limit is your patient’s creativity. Nonetheless, there are some quite common answers. We call them banalities.

These banalities are the most commonly used answers for each card in a specific population. The definition of an answer as “banality” is based on statistic data.

Here, I present the main banalities to Western Europe and North America’s society.

Card I

The most common answers are:

  • Bird
  • Moth
  • Bat

Card II

Black Major Detail (D) apprehension
Patients often see two animals (4 paws’ animals)

Card III

In the major black detail, the banality is a human figure.
In the major red detail in the middle, the banality is a butterfly.

Card IV

An animal hide, skin, rug.

Card V

  • Bat
  • Bird
  • Moth
  • Butterfly

Card VI

An animal hide, skin, rug.

Card VII

There are some popular answers, such as human faces or heads, but no statistically significant banalities.

Card VIII

The lateral pink big details are often considered to be two animals.

Card IX

Human figure (partial or complete)

Card X

Different animals in different details are the most popular answer. A very typical response is that the blue bigger details are spiders or crabs.

Adaptation or Disinvestment?

These are the most common answers, and consequently, their presence shows us that the patient is adapted to reality. Despite that, keep in mind than an excess of these answers also means meager investment in the test.
